Why Setting Goals Matters (and Why “SMART” Goals Actually Work)

Goal setting isn’t about hustling harder, fixing yourself, or chasing someone else’s version of success.

It’s about clarity.

It’s about direction.

And most importantly, it’s about creating a life that feels supportive, sustainable, and aligned with who you are right now — not who you think you “should” be.

So many of us walk through seasons of life (especially motherhood, pregnancy, postpartum, or big transitions) feeling a little lost. We know we want to feel better… stronger… calmer… more energised… but we don’t quite know where to start.

That’s where intentional goal setting comes in.

Why Goals Are So Powerful

Without goals, it’s easy to drift.

We fall into:

• Doing what we think we should do

• Starting things with motivation but no direction

• Feeling overwhelmed, inconsistent, or stuck

• Measuring success by comparison rather than progress

Goals give us something grounding to return to.

They:

• Turn vague desires into clear intentions

• Create focus without pressure

• Help us track progress (even the quiet wins)

• Build confidence through small, achievable steps

When goals are set well, they don’t feel restrictive — they feel supportive.

What Are SMART Goals?

SMART goals are a framework designed to make goals clearer, more realistic, and more achievable.

SMART stands for:

S – Specific

Instead of “I want to feel healthier,”

try:

“I want to move my body 3 times per week in a way that supports my energy.”

Clarity reduces overwhelm.

M – Measurable

This isn’t about perfection — it’s about awareness.

Measurable goals help you see progress:

• Sessions per week

• Minutes of movement

• Consistency over time

• How you feel (energy, strength, confidence)

A – Achievable

Goals should stretch you gently — not break you.

An achievable goal fits into your real life:

• Your season

• Your schedule

• Your capacity

If it feels impossible, it won’t be sustainable.

R – Relevant

This is the most important part.

Your goal should matter to you — not your past self, not social media, not anyone else.

Ask:

• Why does this matter to me right now?

• How will this support my life, not complicate it?

T – Time-Bound

A timeframe creates intention, not pressure.

“I’ll check in with this in 6 weeks”

“I’ll reassess at the end of the month”

This gives you permission to review, adjust, and evolve.

Why SMART Goals Actually Work

SMART goals work because they:

• Reduce decision fatigue

• Create realistic expectations

• Encourage consistency over intensity

• Build momentum through small wins

They take the emotion and self-judgement out of the process and replace it with structure, compassion, and clarity.

And when life shifts (because it always does), SMART goals are flexible enough to shift with you.

Who This Is For

This approach is for you if:

• You’ve tried “starting again” more times than you can count

• You want progress without burnout

• You’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood, or a big life transition

• You want support, accountability, and guidance — not pressure

• You’re ready to work with your body, not against it

You don’t need more motivation.

You need a plan that fits you.

How We Work Together: Client + Coach

As your coach, my role isn’t to tell you what to do or set goals for you.

My role is to walk beside you.

Together, we:

• Clarify what you actually want (not what you think you should want)

• Set realistic, personalised SMART goals

• Create a plan that fits your body, lifestyle, and season

• Adjust as life changes

• Celebrate progress — even when it’s quiet or slow

There is no “failing” here.

Only learning, adapting, and growing.

Your goals don’t have to be extreme to be meaningful.

They just have to be aligned.

Goal setting isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about supporting the version of you that already exists — with intention, compassion, and care.

You’re allowed to take this slowly.

You’re allowed to ask for support.

And you’re allowed to define success on your own terms.

If you’re ready to set goals that feel grounded, realistic, and truly supportive — I’d love to work together.
